Katniss Dress by Calvin Klein

16 Apr

Seems like everyone has Hunger Games fever, including top designers! Calvin Klein and Jennifer Lawrence have made red carpet magic together in the past (Oscars 2011):

And again at a Hunger Games red carpet:

And now Calvin Klein is giving a nod to his muse by creating a “Katniss” dress:

The dress cost $5,000 (kinda pricey) and according to Net-a-Porter it’s – “A key piece from the runway, this apricot silk-crepe dress is a fashion-forward take on the sweet palette. Give this cutout design a streamlined finish with a few gold accents and ankle-strap sandals.” But let’s face it, if we had Jennifer Lawrence’s body, we’d spend that amount of money on dresses too!

Top Baby Names for 2012!

12 Apr

Nameberry has just released their list of the top 16 trending names for the year. The top names of the year have many connections to pop culture and celebrities – especially The Hunger Games!

Top Names of 2012:

Rue (From Namberry: Credit The Hunger Games, which has turned the spotlight on a range of exotic botanical names for girls, from the heroine’s name Katniss to gentle Primrose to Posy andClove.  But the hottest choice for babies, according to the Nameberry statistics, is sleek, simple, if somewhat mournfulRue, the name of the agile young girl who meets a tragic end in the series.  In real life, however, we see Rue as having a bright future.)

Emmett, Everett, and Beckett (Twilight’s Emmett Cullen)

Ivy (Beyonce and Jay Z)

Weston, Wesley, and West (All variety of West names are hot this year, but Weston, the choice of The Office’s JennaFischer for her son, is the hottest of them all.)

Adele (Pop star Adele)

Grayson and Gray (Hot new television series Revenge, which focuses on the Grayson family, may be having an influence.)

Cyrus (An ancient royal name, it’s got a fashionable S ending, is the surname of pop star Miley, and sports the cute nickname Cy.)

Estelle (Sweden’s royal couple named their baby daughterEstelle earlier this year, which is one reason for its increased attention.)

Cato (Cato might be a villain in The Hunger Games, but the popular series turned attention on a name that fits into a couple of other hot trends.  It’s an ancient Roman name that, like brothers Atticus and Cassius, is being resurrected by modern parents.  It’s got the stylish O ending.  And it kind of sounds like Kate, a name in the spotlight thanks to the new future Queen of England.)

Blythe ( Most closely identified withGwyneth Paltrow’s mom actress Blythe Danner, the one-syllable name has never been in the Top 1000 but could be a top middle name choice of tomorrow.)

Hunger Games!!!

20 Mar

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to see The Hunger Games at a pre-press screening yesterday and I can finally break my silence!

First off, you have to know I have read all three books and LOVE them to death…so going into the movie, I was a tough customer. The movie is good and they did a great job painting a visual picture of Panem, The Capital, and the districts. I just don’t think the emotional picture was as strong. It’s hard to pack all the “baggage” of the characters from the book into a 142 minute movie…and that is where the movie fell short for me.

Jennifer Lawrence does a great job portraying Katniss. She is hard and cold on the outside, but is tender and loving on the inside – and even vulnerable at times. She is absolutely gorgeous to look at on the big screen without a spec of makeup. AND she totally rocked her outfits! From her “girl on fire” jump suit to her blue “reaping day” dress – it was spot on!

Josh Hutcherson is a great Peeta – considering the parameters he was given. You don’t get to know depths of Peeta’s love for Katniss in the movie- due to the writing/directing. BUT Josh is able to be charming and vulnerable – the two redeeming qualities of his character in the book.

The character of Haymitch Abernathy was dramatically altered in the movie version…he wasn’t drunk enough and he was way too focused! When we first meet Haymitch, played by Woody Harrelson, he’s drunk in true Haymitch style – but that’s the only point in the movie he is very true to character. I guess there wasn’t enough time to show the relationship between Haymitch and the tributes (Katniss and Peeta).

Elizabeth Banks certainly looked the part of Effie Trinket, but her character was changed for the movie as well. They made her cold and snobby instead of naive and lovable as she is in the book. That was disappointing but her makeup and costumes were fantastic! From her false pink eyelashes to her huge puffy sleeves- the costume design was great!

Stanley Tucci as Ceasar Flickerman was perfect casting and so was Donald Sutherland as President Snow. The character of Gale Hawthorne played by Liam Hemsworth was downplayed a lot – although he was very handsome just like in the book! And Rue is just adorable and lovable – even cuter than I pictured in the book.

One change from book-to-movie I was a big fan of was the “game makers” hub. It was a nice addition to see the action behind the scenes and all the high-tech gadgets and computers they use to create the “death arena” for the tributes.

I think you can call the movie “Hunger Games Light” – and it’s a good shortened version of the book BUT you do get short-changed.

Have you ever wanted to talk to a has-been or pseudo celebrity? Well, now you can…for a price! A new company called Dial-A-Star will have people like Octomom, Lindsay Lohan‘s dad, and former Real Housewives available to talk to you LIVE over the phone.

“Celebrities can charge whatever they want per minute and get to keep 50 percent of whatever they make,” company founder Gina Rodriguez says.

So far, you can chat with either of Lindsay’s parents for $10 a minute, while Octomom and an ex-Charlie Sheen goddess will cost you $15 a minute. However, you must be willing to pay a whopping $18 a minute to get on the phone with Danielle Staub.

Rodriguez says the business model is working so well that there are even plans to expand with international calls.

Hottest Irish Celebs!

16 Mar

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner! And according to the Census Bureau, 36 million U.S. residents claim Irish ancestry. That number is almost nine times the population of Ireland itself (3.9 million).  So the odds are some hot and sexy celebs are of Irish decent.

Top 5 Irish Actors

5. Cillian Murphy: Cillian Murphy was born in Douglas, a suburb of Cork, Ireland. The actor has appeared in many films, but perhaps he was most desirable in the opening moments of Red Eye, where he played the perfect potential boyfriend to Rachel McAdams’ character. That is, until he turned out to be a homicidal lunatic. Murphy has a laid-back, cool persona and would likely make a charming date.

4. Jonathan Rhys Meyers: This television actor, who was born in Dublin, Ireland, has a reputation for partying and would be a great person to hit the clubs with on St. Patty’s Day. His piercing blue eyes also make him almost impossible to resist. And come on, even he made King Henry VIII hot in The Tudors!

3. Pierce Brosnan: Okay, so he’s married, but our list wouldn’t be complete without James Bond. Plus, there’s hope for a movie romance: with every new film comes another Bond girl. Brosnan was born and grew up in Ireland and is practically ageless, both qualities that help him play the super suave and sexy spy.

2. Mark Wahlberg: Marky Mark was born in the most Irish town in America: Boston, Massachusetts. Boston is the best place in the U.S. to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. If you are lucky, maybe Wahlberg will take you to some of his favorite pubs in the city. Am I the only one who didn’t know he was Irish?

1. Colin Farrell: No actor flaunts his Irish heritage as much as Colin Farrell. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Farrell is known for being one of Hollywood’s bad boys. But, he does has a soft side. Farrell has said that what inspired him to become an actor was watching E.T., which brought him to tears.

Top 5 Irish Actresses

5. Jennifer Connelly: Jennifer Connelly is of Irish descent, thanks to her father. You can very easily see it in her face. Do you know what you cannot see in her face? Her age. Jennifer Connelly is 41 years old and does not look a day over 30. She is a beauty queen and easily one of the sexiest women on the planet.

4. Olivia Wilde: This rising star has citizenship in Ireland. Coming off of some major television and movie roles, Wilde is becoming one of the hottest names in Hollywood. If she is anything like some of the characters she plays, she is kind-hearted and absolutely loveable but with a bit of an attitude as well.

3. Rooney Mara: She may have played a Swedish hacker in last winter’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but Mara comes from an extremely Irish family. Her great uncle was, at one time, the United States Ambassador to Ireland. Mara is very shy and modest in interviews. This makes her one of the cutest and most humble people in the business. Oh, and she is absolutely gorgeous.

2. Zooey Deschanel: Who can resist Zooey Deschanel? The New Girl and (500) Days of Summer star has a glowing personality but manages to be more down to Earth than a lot of other actresses. She would be an entertaining date because she knows how to laugh at herself – and how to make you laugh, too. A combination of her bubbly personality and beautiful, big blue eyes will make her very difficult to ignore.

1. Anne Hathaway: Hathaway is of mostly Irish ancestry, which is pretty obvious when you look at her. Based on interviews and what many in the inner circle of Hollywood have said, Anne is one of the sweetest, nicest people in the business. Last summer, she starred in the romantic film One Day, leaving many of her fans wanting to spend more than just one day with her. This summer, however, she will take on a much darker role as the new Catwoman in the next Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises.

Grammy Fashion: From the Pretty, to the Boring…and the Scary!

13 Feb

Let’s start with who I liked:

Fergie looked fresh, edgy, and appropriate. The Grammy’s celebrate artistry – it’s one of the only award shows you can get away with wearing more daring outfits! Gown by Jean Paul Gaultier (bra and panties by ?).

Carrie Underwood hits it out of the park 9 times out of 10, and last night was no exception. She was a vision in white – but I did miss seeing her amazing legs! Gown by Gomez-Garcia.

The big star of the night (besides Whitney Houston) was Adele, taking home SIX Grammys – including album, record, and song of the year! She looked slimmer and rather chic in a black sparkly gown by Armani.

Rihanna could make a paper sack look hot – and she showed off a lot of skin last night in a gorgeous Armani backless and nearly frontless gown. Although I am not a fan of her hair.

Then there’s Amber Rose, who usually has no taste – BUT I like the color of her dress.  The dress is not exciting, but the color is just perfect on her skin.

Speaking of color, Katy Perry surprised us all by being BORING! Known for her outrageous outfits and showing off a lot of skin, Katy toned it down…well toned it blue in a gown by Ellie Saab.

I’m just going to move to the scary. Lots in the scary category and all for very different reasons.

Let’s start with the Lady Gaga wannabe: Sasha Gradiva. Gun sleeves are not edgy, interesting, or sexy.

Robyn is British, but that’s not an excuse to look terrible. White is a nice color…but the dress is ill-fitting and the shoes are just too nasty to discuss.

Continuing with the bad…and I have to call it – another Lady Gaga rip off: Nicki Minaj. And I usually love her cooky fashion and sherbet colored hair but this was just a lame attempt.

I don’t know who Bonnie Mckee is and I am glad I don’t. At least her ugly dress got her some attention.

Speaking of attention…nothing like showing your muff to get attention. Victoria’s Secret Model and girlfriend of Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, Anne V, nearly had a few wardrobe malfunctions…
