Bienvenido a Miami!

21 May

Greetings from sunny Miami! (side note: it’s actually sunny most of the time BUT we apparently arrived during rainy season, and it has been raining every day) If you didn’t know already, I have left my position as Morning Co-Host (Morning Diva) at 95.9 The Ranch and I have moved to Miami to pursue a new career! Well, my boyfriend has started a new career – I am still looking. :-)

Who knew Miami would be so different from Texas!?

The move has been an adventure so far, and I am sure it will continue to be…before we even left our old place we had issues but now we are hanging out in an extended stay hotel (with Romeo) while we look for a place to live! Looking for an apartment/condo in Miami is a far cry from how we did it in Texas. Most places are individually owned condos for rent – at a premium! So far we have seen what is considered the low-end and not so low-end…I would say high-end but we didn’t venture into any of the $10,000/month condos – even though that would have been a sight to see! We just put an offer on a place, so keep your fingers crossed we aren’t homeless too much longer.

I am not sure where or what my next job will be, but I promise to keep you posted!

The Joey Bra!

30 Apr

If you’ve ever put together the perfect “going-out” ensemble and realized you didn’t want to lug a purse around BUT wondered where the heck you could stash your ID and phone…FEAR NO MORE: someone has created a stash bra – a bra with a pocket called The Joey Bra!

According to their website, “the first sexy, yet functional pocketed bra that will allow you to leave your purse behind and hit the dance floor without ever having to worry about the safety of your valuables. Our unique design will hold most cellphones, ID, key, and other small items regardless of bust size – no amount of items will change the way your bra fits you.

Now this sounds like a pretty good idea (better than shoving cash in your cleavage) but I can’t imagine an iPhone in your armpit is too comfy. And, it could also be hard to access if you’re not wearing a tank top or something with a low neck…and you probably won’t look too classy reaching for your money at the cash bar at your cousin’s wedding!

Flabby Fashion?

24 Apr

According to expert contributors at Daily Mail, some of our favorite fashion statements are making us carry around some extra pounds! You won’t believe what should be fab is making you flab:

YOUR HANDBAG: After noticing some of his patients carry more fat on one side of their body, cosmetic doctor Michael Prager realized that it was often the side on which the patients held their oversized handbags. “Before I perform laser fat removal I measure where patients carry fat, so we can measure inch loss post-treatment,’ he says. ‘Many of my female patients carry more fat down one side of their body and their fat stores were uneven. The only thing these women had in common was their ridiculously big handbags.”

FAKE TAN: For years we’ve thought a fake tan will leave us looking slimmer and more toned. But could it actually make us fatter in the long run? Scientists in Sweden have discovered that chemicals known as phthalates in self-tanning lotions make us more prone to weight gain and twice as likely to develop diabetes.

MULTI-TASKING: For most women, continuously switching between chores is part and parcel of daily life. But new research has found that serially switching tasks exhausts the part of our brain that regulates self-control. “When you help your kids with their homework, then respond to a work email on your BlackBerry, then go right back to algebra, you’re doing tasks that require very different mindsets. which is what we found saps self-control resources,” says Professor Ryan Hamilton, who worked on the study.

LEGGINGS: Sammy Margo, a physiotherapist, has warned that too-tight leggings can cause your muscles to become lazy, which results in a flabby stomach, bottom and legs. ‘Leggings feel good and look great, and I am as addicted to them as anyone, but there is a downside,’ she says. ‘They hold in and support the thigh muscles, buttocks and core muscles in your tummy, and do the job the muscles are supposed to do. As a result, the muscles are allowed to relax and switch off. So when we reveal our bodies for the first time as summer approaches, they are not as svelte or firm as they otherwise would be.’

HIGH HEELS: Personal trainer Dax Moy thinks that wearing vertiginous heels too often can cause your stomach muscles to spill forward. ‘Wearing very high heels causes the forward tilting of the pelvis, which allows the abdominal contents to spill forward, producing a pot belly which many women have wrongly come to think of as a fat stomach,’ says Dax.

That’s One Spoiled Baby!

19 Apr

At just under $3,200 you can spoil your baby with their own Baby Jaccuzzi! It’s a little more expensive than just using your kitchen sink for baths—which probably came free with your home—but does your sink provide soft relaxing jets of bubbles? And does it have a set of colored LEDs on the bottom for soothing chromatherapy sessions? Probably not, which means you need to get the baby whirlpool by MagicBath!

The tub itself DOES look expensive and high quality…but what is up with the rubbermaid stand!?

Top Baby Names for 2012!

12 Apr

Nameberry has just released their list of the top 16 trending names for the year. The top names of the year have many connections to pop culture and celebrities – especially The Hunger Games!

Top Names of 2012:

Rue (From Namberry: Credit The Hunger Games, which has turned the spotlight on a range of exotic botanical names for girls, from the heroine’s name Katniss to gentle Primrose to Posy andClove.  But the hottest choice for babies, according to the Nameberry statistics, is sleek, simple, if somewhat mournfulRue, the name of the agile young girl who meets a tragic end in the series.  In real life, however, we see Rue as having a bright future.)

Emmett, Everett, and Beckett (Twilight’s Emmett Cullen)

Ivy (Beyonce and Jay Z)

Weston, Wesley, and West (All variety of West names are hot this year, but Weston, the choice of The Office’s JennaFischer for her son, is the hottest of them all.)

Adele (Pop star Adele)

Grayson and Gray (Hot new television series Revenge, which focuses on the Grayson family, may be having an influence.)

Aria

Cyrus (An ancient royal name, it’s got a fashionable S ending, is the surname of pop star Miley, and sports the cute nickname Cy.)

Blythe ( Most closely identified withGwyneth Paltrow’s mom actress Blythe Danner, the one-syllable name has never been in the Top 1000 but could be a top middle name choice of tomorrow.)

If you don’t know what Pinterest is, you really need to just go check it out but it’s kinda like a picture-sharing program that allows users to essentially create ‘vision boards’ of their favorite things. Think of an organized collage!

Really? Picnic Pants?

30 Mar

Sometimes we come up with crazy ideas and never do anything about them – and a lot of the times that’s a good thing! Well an Italian brand called Acquacalda has decided to go ahead and MAKE THEM! ICK!

They say the pic-nic pant, promises to “take advantage of the usual cross-legged position to become a comfortable surface usual for consumption of a meal outdoors.” In other words, pants that serve as a table top or, well, pants on which you can have an actual picnic! Look at the photos below:

If the photos are any indication, these things look kinda crazy and hard to walk in! Not sure who is doing so much picnicing they need a special pair of pants – but to each their own!

Love Me, Love My Shoes!

26 Mar

Someone in Malaysia has come up with a genius idea: Shoe Dating! Listen up, this is about to get complicated…A guy chooses a pair of shoes from a store that he would like to see his potential “mate” wear. Then he pays for part of that shoe (leaves a deposit). Women then go into this store and shop as usual. When they go up to the register to buy a pair of shoes, they can get them at a discounted rate IF she goes on a blind date with the man who also chose that shoe (and paid for part of it- thus making it discounted).

Has the potential to be a modern-day Cinderella Story – unless of course you get matched with a weirdo with a creepy foot fetish!

Hunger Games!!!

20 Mar

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to see The Hunger Games at a pre-press screening yesterday and I can finally break my silence!

First off, you have to know I have read all three books and LOVE them to death…so going into the movie, I was a tough customer. The movie is good and they did a great job painting a visual picture of Panem, The Capital, and the districts. I just don’t think the emotional picture was as strong. It’s hard to pack all the “baggage” of the characters from the book into a 142 minute movie…and that is where the movie fell short for me.

Jennifer Lawrence does a great job portraying Katniss. She is hard and cold on the outside, but is tender and loving on the inside – and even vulnerable at times. She is absolutely gorgeous to look at on the big screen without a spec of makeup. AND she totally rocked her outfits! From her “girl on fire” jump suit to her blue “reaping day” dress – it was spot on!

Josh Hutcherson is a great Peeta – considering the parameters he was given. You don’t get to know depths of Peeta’s love for Katniss in the movie- due to the writing/directing. BUT Josh is able to be charming and vulnerable – the two redeeming qualities of his character in the book.

The character of Haymitch Abernathy was dramatically altered in the movie version…he wasn’t drunk enough and he was way too focused! When we first meet Haymitch, played by Woody Harrelson, he’s drunk in true Haymitch style – but that’s the only point in the movie he is very true to character. I guess there wasn’t enough time to show the relationship between Haymitch and the tributes (Katniss and Peeta).

Elizabeth Banks certainly looked the part of Effie Trinket, but her character was changed for the movie as well. They made her cold and snobby instead of naive and lovable as she is in the book. That was disappointing but her makeup and costumes were fantastic! From her false pink eyelashes to her huge puffy sleeves- the costume design was great!

Stanley Tucci as Ceasar Flickerman was perfect casting and so was Donald Sutherland as President Snow. The character of Gale Hawthorne played by Liam Hemsworth was downplayed a lot – although he was very handsome just like in the book! And Rue is just adorable and lovable – even cuter than I pictured in the book.

One change from book-to-movie I was a big fan of was the “game makers” hub. It was a nice addition to see the action behind the scenes and all the high-tech gadgets and computers they use to create the “death arena” for the tributes.

I think you can call the movie “Hunger Games Light” – and it’s a good shortened version of the book BUT you do get short-changed.
